Airfoil for Mac Release Notes

Airfoil 5.12.0Requires MacOS 14.4 or Higher

Released on March 21, 2024

  • ⚠️ “System Audio” Sources Users, Take Note
The “System Audio” source, used to stream all audio playing on the Mac, has been renamed “System-Wide Audio”. Be aware that an issue with MacOS 14.4 may lead to audio dropouts when using this source.

Fixes are expected in a forthcoming update to MacOS, but you may wish to delay updating Airfoil. Alternately, to work around the issue, select a specific application as your source. For more details, see this link.

  • A Powerful New Audio Capture Backend
Airfoil now uses a new audio capture backend called Audio Routing Kit, or “ARK” for short. Thanks to ARK, Airfoil can be set up on a new Mac in seconds, with no restarts or passwords required.

  • New “System Audio Access” Permission
The “Permissions” window has been updated, with a new “System Audio Access” permission. This permission enables you to use Airfoil to stream audio from applications you specify.

  • Standard User Accounts Welcome
Standard MacOS user accounts can now stream audio with Airfoil, without needing any help from an Administrator account.

  • Erroneous Microphone-In-Use Indicators, Begone!
Previously, when Airfoil was playing audio to a device that also has input channels, or capturing from any application on MacOS 14.2 and higher, MacOS would erroneously display its orange microphone-in-use indicator. With changes to Airfoil’s audio capture backend, that is no longer the case, and we’re very glad about it.

  • The “Sources” menu has been updated to alphabetize using the on-disk name, which ensures apps like “Ableton Live” appear where you’d expect.

  • Using the “Factory Reset” option in the “Debugging” window now correctly visually updates the “Hidden Settings” section.

  • The “Uninstall ACE…” button in the “Debugging” window will now only appear if ACE is currently installed.

  • Airfoil now provides a new “Limit audio capture to default output” hidden preference, for use with apps that play audio to multiple audio devices.

  • Airfoil now includes an automated re-downloader, to ensure you have the proper variant for your MacOS version.

  • Airfoil’s “Source” menu once again uses a single down arrow, the correct look for a pull-down button.

  • Airfoil’s “About” box now shows the details about the audio engine it’s using.

  • Airfoil 5.12.0 Is for MacOS 14.4 and Higher
This variant of Airfoil supports MacOS 14.4 and higher. On MacOS 11 through 14.3.1, a different variant is automatically used, with no action required on your part.

If you want to hear your Mac's audio on another Mac, Windows machine, or iOS device, just run the free Airfoil Satellite there. Airfoil will see it and enable you to send audio to it! Airfoil Satellite also offers remote control of both supported source applications, as well as Airfoil itself. Now you can control playback, toggle outputs off and on, and much more, all remotely.
